The Spanish Group is formed by Prof. Dr. Jaime Prohens, Prof. Dr. Santiago Vilanova, Prof. Dr. Ana Fita, Prof. Dr. Adrián Rodríguez-Burruezo, Dr. Isabel Andújar, PhD students Francisco Javier Herráiz and Pietro Gramazio and technician Mariola Plazas. All of them are affiliated to the Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain). The team leader and coordinator of the project is Prof. Dr. Jaime Prohens, who is full professor of Genetics and Plant Breeding and Director of the Institute for Conservation and Improvement of Valencian Agrodiversity (COMAV). This is an interdisciplinary group with wide experience in eggplant breeding, characterization and evaluation, molecular markers development, marker assisted breeding, interspecific hybridation, and embryo rescue. The group has obtained advanced backcross generations from S. incanum into the genetic background of S. melongena by means of marker assisted selection. During the last years, the members have published more than 25 papers in international JCR refereed journals and organized the 2010 edition of the triennial EUCARPIA Capsicum and Eggplant Meeting (2010), with 172 participants.
